We caught up with our newest recruit Kath who joined us back in December, after gaining a Distinction in Building Surveying MSc.
She’s been busy visiting sites across the UK but we managed to grab 30 seconds to ask her a few questions.
What have you enjoyed most about your first couple of months at Vantage?
The team are all really friendly and welcoming. The support I’ve received from everyone has been great. I’ve particularly enjoyed the responsibility given to me and the opportunity to work on lots of different aspects of surveying. I never expected to have learnt and developed as much as I have in such a short space of time.
What would your top tip be for anyone looking to become a building surveyor?
Firstly it sounds obvious, but study an RICS accredited degree with a leading University in the field. Connect with relevant people on LinkedIn and follow up with a personal message. Make yourself stand out, whether that be by your approach or being proactive when looking for hands-on experience.
What do you think of Manchester?
It feels like there’s always so much going on. I love the mix of old and new buildings, it’s a great city to be in and to look at.
We all know you love to paint outside work, tell us about your favourite picture?
I love drawing things from my life experiences. I like to travel and usually paint interesting things that I see in places. One that stands out to me is an old tree situated in a fertility shrine in Thailand.
What’s the best piece of advice you’ve been given so far in your career?
Don’t be afraid to try things on your own and to get things wrong. That’s the best way to learn. We all make mistakes and that shouldn’t be held against you.
